Outlaw Trails of the Wild West 2005

Beginning in Los Angeles and traveling through California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, the Outlaw Trails of the Wild West allows customers the opportunity to relive the old west as a cowboy. The tour winds its way through the Mojave Desert to the gaming tables of Laughlin, NV, and through the Anasazi Indians' cliff dwelling and petroglyphs. The red rock canyons of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, the sandstone of Glen Canyon and the cliffs of Capital Reef National Park complete with the astounding rock formations of Bryce Canyon National Park, a natural hot spring in a hidden canyon near Mammoth Lakes, and a day exploring the back country of Yosemite National Park. The pack interweaves visits to civilizations with stops in Las Vegas, NV, and stops in San Francisco, Carmel, Pismo Beach, Zuma Beach and Hollywood, CA.

The hotel shuttle is available approx. every 20 minutes at the Los Angeles International Airport and will shuttle you to the hotel for a nap before the evening dinner party where your tour guides will introduce themselves, the tour itinerary and complete travel documents. Then we recommend an early bedtime to prepare for the adventure to come.

The moment has come: you are escorted to the showroom floor. In a few minutes you will be embarking on the vacation adventure of a lifetime and your dream is about to become reality. As your heart pounds, you strap on your black leather jacket and worn boots and settle yourself into the saddle of the chrome and steel 'ride', a gleaming, new-model Harley-Davidson. You are a modern cowboy heading for the open range on an iron horse vibrating with 1450 cc's of power. In minutes you and your new friends are out of the city and on a winding mountain road en route to a little biker's bar on a cliff overlooking Lake Elsinore. After lunch, the cool air warms as you soar like an eagle into the open country of the Mojave desert, and the home of the movie stars, Palm Springs.

The Mojave Desert air rips past your face bringing unfamiliar smells of the old west: sage pinion pine and datura as you roll into Joshua Tree National Monument where some of the best climbers in the world gather to challenge the vertical walls. Then you find Old Route 66 and follow it across the historic desert. By day's end your hotel looks very good as you pull onto the main street of the wild west gambling town of Laughlin, Nevada.

We follow Route66 most of the way along the high plateaus of Arizona. We stop for lunch in the old west town of Williams or Ash Fork and then on to one the greatest sights man has ever seen - the spectacular Grand Canyon, in time for the reddest sunset you’ve ever seen!!

We leave early and the air is cool and brisk at 7500 feet as we follow the Canyon east through magnificent pine forests. We stop at navajos roadside stands for beautiful turquoise jewelery and indian artifacts. And then on to the incredible Monument Valley and into Kayenta for lunch. Then we enter Utah and follow the San Juan River up through Mexican Hat. Here we can view some Anstazi ruins.

Today's ride is breathtaking. We cross the Colorado River where it pours into the gigantic Lake Powell where we can go for a swim. And then we wind up to higher ground and into Hanksville for lunch. Just before the incredible Capital Reef National Park, we pull over for a delicious swim in a cool, blue pool under a cascading waterfall. Refreshed, we roar on up to the Devil’s Backbone and through the Escalante Wilderness Area, and on down to Bryce Canyon.

We see both Bryce and Zion today. Besides seeing the most beautiful rock formations found anywhere on earth, we also get some of the most challenging motorcycle riding of the tour - the switchbacks of Zion!! It doesn't take long before the cool mountain air is replaced by the heat of the desert. Fortunately you aren't far from the neon oasis of Las Vegas where we have an evening of outrageous revelry planned on the gaming tables at the famous Las Vegas Strip.

OF INTEREST: Your guides wake you up early this morning and you find yourself rolling across the desert in the beautiful early morning light. Soon you pass the infamous Cottontail Ranch and swing into the switchbacks that lie north of Death Valley and zigzag over mountain passes and valley floors into Big Pine California. We head north to Bishop, and stop for the night after a long beautiful days ride.

OF INTEREST: You push your Harley through the winding granite canyons of Tioga Pass into Yosemite National Park where you enjoy most of the day exploring one of the natural wonders of the world. You take a trail that is edged into a vertical cliff as the mist from a 1000 meter waterfall keeps you cool even as its roar deafens you. After you return to the valley floor you spy two fearless climbers clinging like flies to the granite face. You watch as they prepare to spend the night hanging from the wall. While you prepare to spend the night in the beautiful Yosemite Lodge.You sit silently beside the gentle sounds of the Tuoloumne River and watch the milky way spread across the western sky as night falls on the valley.

OF INTEREST: Your guides lead you out of Yosemite after an early breakfast. You twist the big iron though California’s old west gold rush country on a road that never has a staight moment.You try your hand at panning for gold in a cold mountain stream. Legendary bandits Black Bart and Juoquin Marietta rode these hills. You visit the jails that couldn’t hold them in gold-mining towns that inspired American western writers Mark Twain and Bret Harte. Then you cross the San Juoquin Valley, California’s fruitbasket, past miles of orange, peach and walnut orchards and acres of vineyards. With the western sun glinting off skyscrapers, you rumble in a pack of Harleys across the Bay Bridge into one of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco. Your hotel is in the middle of the city, a perfect location for an evening of riding on the cable car from the blues clubs on Fisherman’s Wharf to the jazz spots in North Beach to China town.

There is no better way to get a sense of the San Francisco Bay Area than on the seat of a Harley. You cross the Golden Gate Bridge and roll through the bayside village of Sausalito and on up through the magnificent redwood forest of Muir Woods, around the beautiful Mount Tamalpais and down to the seacoast resort of Stinson Beach for lunch. Then we follow the seacoast back into the city for the evenings festivities.

You glide through the turns high above the rugged coastline and remote ocean bays. You cruise past San Simeon 'castle' tiny seaside art communities and miles of sandy beaches on the south side of Big Sur to the hotel in Pismo Beach. As night falls, the jasmine flowers perfume the soft coastal air. It feels like paradise and it just might be. Welcome to southern California.
